Biography of Coach Tom Feely
Owner and President of the Feely Kicking School

Coach Tom Feely with sons Tyler and Nick visit Giants Stadium in the Meadowlands

Education/Professional Accomplishments:

In January of 2007 Tom Feely earned National Board Certification. He is the only Nationally Board Certified Teacher working in the kicking coaching industry.

Tom earned his B.A. at the University of St. Thomas in St. Paul with a double major in Physical Education and Social Sciences in 1974. He began his career teaching and coaching in Minnesota . After his first two seasons as a varsity high school football coach he already had back to back state championships on his coaching resume ( New Prague High School ). He has been coaching football every year since he began in 1974 (33 years), serving as head coach, offensive coordinator, defensive coordinator, and special teams coordinator. He currently is the Special Teams Coordinator at Jesuit High School in Tampa , Florida .

In 1980 he earned his Master’s Degree in the field of Counseling. That same year he began his counseling career working primarily in the field of college counseling and scholarship acquisition. He served as Director of Guidance for St. Thomas Academy (1980-1986) and also for Zephyrhillls High School , Florida (1987-1996). In 1996 Tom was awarded the “Counselor of the Year” by the University of  Miami .

Tom is the tenth counselor in Hillsborough (FL.) County’s history (his current employer) to be Nationally Board Certified as a Counselor. Tom is also licensed and certified by the Florida Supreme Court as a Family Mediator and as a Parenting Coordinator.

In 1986-1987 Tom studied Sports Psychology under the famous Dr. Robert Singer and Dr David Pargman while pursuing his Doctorate in the field of Sports Psychology. Tom focused his research on the power of mental imagery and factors producing “mental toughness”.

Tom began his specialty as a kicking coach in 1992 when his oldest son, Jay Feely, was 14 and became interested in becoming a kicker in high school. Jay became a high school Blue Chip All American and thus helped launched his father’s reputation as a gifted teacher of kicking and punting. Jay went on to play for the 1997 National Champions, University of Michigan . After his college days, Jay came back to Tampa to coach with his dad at Jesuit High School while Jay continued to train for a professional kicking career. In 2001 Jay made the final roster for the Atlanta Falcons as an unrestricted free agent and in that same year he was selected the NFL rookie kicker of the year. Jay led the NFL in scoring in 2002 and 2005. After two years with the New York Giants (2005 and 2006) in which he had the best two years span of any kicker in Giants history Jay was signed by the Miami Dolphins.

Tom and his sons, Jay, John, and Ryan are all very instrumental in our mission to spread to the athletes we are privileged to encounter, not only the skills of kicking and punting, but more importantly, the attitudes and values that help make young people become successful at whatever they dream to accomplish. Tom’s rich background as a teacher, passionately shares with his protégées.

Family:

Tom was born and raised as one of four boys of a true coaching legend, his father (left), Tom Feely Sr. who was inducted into the college basketball Hall of Fame in 1977 as both a player and coach.

Tom Feely Sr.’s legacy continued as his boys were all sports legends in Minnesota both as players and coaches. Their collective accomplishments are too numerous to list here.

Tom (Jr.) also raised six sons, many of whom have successful careers, most notably...
Jay Feely, NFL Kicker
