JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - JU senior punter/place kicker Ryan Feely was named to The Sports Network 2005 I-AA Mid-Major All-America team as a punter on Tuesday. Feely, who was recently named to the ESPN the Magazine Academic All-District team and earned first team all-PFL honors for the second consecutive year, led the PFL and ranked sixth nationally in punting, averaging 42.8 yard per kick, while nailing 10 punts inside the 20-yard line and forcing five fair catches. He also set a school record with a 70-yard punt, while booting 11 punts over 50-yards, five fair catches, 10 punts inside the 20 yard line. He averaged at least 40 yards per punt in seven of his last eight games and booted at least a 50-yard punt in seven of JU's eight games. As a place kicker, he led the squad with 46 points after connecting on 25-of-27 extra points and 7-of-11 field goal attempts. He also had 24 kickoffs for a touchback on the year. A communications major with a 3.50 gpa, Feely will also earn PFL Academic Honor Roll honors for the second consecutive year. "Ryan is going to be one of the hardest players for us to replace because of his versatility as a punter, place kicker and kick-off specialist," said JU head coach Steve Gilbert. "I am sure more accolades will continue to pour in as the year goes on and hopefully that will give him a better chance to compete at the next level." The younger brother of New York Giants kicker Jay Feely, Feely was also named The Sports Network's Division I-AA Mid-Major Preseason All-America, Division I-AA Second-Team All-Eastern Region by Don Hansen's National Weekly Football Gazette, I-AA Mid-Major All-America Team by The Sports Network and CollegeSports.com, as well as first team all-Pioneer Football League honors after leading the league in punting last season. As a junior, he ranked 18th in Division I-AA in punting with a 40.9 yard average, including 14 punts inside the 20-yard line and eight fair catches. He also booted 10 punts of 50 or more yards during the season, including a then school-record-tying 69-yarder. Feely connected on 19-of-21 point-after attempts and nailed five field goals, including a pair of career-long 38-yarders. Feely, who transferred to JU following three seasons at UCF, was slated to be the Dolphins' place kicker but assumed the punting duties when All-America punter Ryan Long did not return to school. |
